Paso Robles Rising Star: Brian Benson Cellars
Friday March 27th, 4pm-8pm
Winemaking prodigy Brian Benson made his first wine in 1997 at the age of 12. He started to learn
winemaking in elementary school while spending time at his
grandparents' vineyard. His father later purchased 10 acres of vineyard
in Westside Paso Robles in 1995 where Brian worked part-time on the
weekends, and the rest is history.
Benson's style is classic Paso: big, rich, and ripe--the way wine
should be in those parts--and his production is tiny, allowing him to
focus on crafting the highest quality wines possible. Each wine
expresses a distinct personality reflective its provenance. These
defining characteristics are the inspiration behind the art on each
Wine of the Week: March 24th, 2015
2012 Domaine de la Cote Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Regular Retail Price: $44.99
This Week: $39.99*
Domaine de la Côte is a small collection of vineyards in western Santa Rita Hills owned and managed by legendary sommelier Raj Parr and noted winemaker Sashi Moorman.
The Santa Rita Hills appellation is among California's preeminent
growing regions for world-class Pinot Noir, so it makes sense that Parr
and Moorman set their sights on this particular corner of the Central
Coast for their project. Moorman discovered the site in 2007 with
viticulturalist Chris King of Evening Lands. Together they replanted the
vineyards entirely to California heritage selections, experimenting
with high-density plantings. Parr and Moorman purchased the vineyards in
2013. Although Domaine de la Cote's holding is only 40 acres, the
differing factors of geology, aspect, elevation and microclimate of each vineyard contribute to very different expressions of terroir and vintage in each lot.
In addition, Domaine
de la Cote farms its vineyards organically and makes wines with a
hands-off approach, in keeping with the philosophy of “add nothing; take
nothing away.” The resulting wines are beautiful, authentic expressions of Santa Rita Hills terroir crafted with Burgundian elegance.
91 points Josh Raynolds: "Light,
bright red. Mineral-accented aromas of cherry, redcurrant and fresh
rose show very good clarity and building spiciness. Silky and seamless
on the palate, offering vibrant red fruit and rose pastille flavors and
deeper notes of cola and anise. Finishes on a sexy floral pastille note,
with gentle tannins, strong persistence and lingering minerality."
